- Artist is working in a way that fits our definition of “socially engaged”: The work is directly participating in everyday life, its forms are social rather than material, and the audience is an integral participant within the work.
- Artist engages the curator’s hypothesis about excellence in this field: We are beginning with the premise that socially engaged work is most effective and most aesthetically compelling when it is generous. All chosen artists engage the notion of generosity in a way that the curator finds compelling.
- The curator and all artists must meet A Blade of Grass’ criteria for grants: Artists must be New York City-based, demonstrate a genuine financial need and be able to meaningfully contribute to the fall program element if chosen to participate. Artists must clearly be chosen by the curator in service of her curatorial position.
