Introducing Landscapes // Issue 01: Another Way

A graphic with the “Landscapes" logo written out in mismatched, bold, bright green text with a digitally drawn squiggle at the bottom of the letters.A Blade of Grass (aBoG) is thrilled to launch Landscapes , a flexible digital platform for collaboration and commissions exploring ecosystems of socially engaged art.
The first collection of contributions, Another Way, centers artists in their own voices to spotlight the wisdom of our creative community. Anchored by a set of twelve questions created by artist Chloë Bass to gain insight into practitioners’ work and person, Another Way gathers responses, reflections, and expertise from a range of contributors. Exploring the knowledge passed through creative lineages and the ways socially engaged practice proliferates inside and outside of institutions, Another Way provides a window into ongoing conversations between friends and mentors.

A graphic with large black text reads “In our social and professional worlds, we are all navigating tricky terrain while advocating for ourselves and our work. We hoped that aBoG could play the role of crowdsourcing and collecting different kinds of approaches to questions that we all navigate in this field.” The quote is attributed to Risa Puleo in the same large black text with her name encircled in the bottom right corner. The background of the graphic is a green gradient wash.

This editorial platform and the direction for Another Way  were created in collaboration with curator and writer Risa Puleo, who served as an advisor and thought partner to the organization this year. Risa’s profound history of curating, commissioning, and writing about the work of socially engaged artists consistently demonstrates other ways of responding to the urgent conditions of the moment.

We’re so grateful to the people who graciously contributed to Another Way:

A black graphic with the “Landscapes” logo written out in mismatched, bold, large text in the top left corner. Under the logo “Issue 01” is written out in green, all caps text. A thin green squiggle extends throughout the center of the graphic, leading towards uniform large text that reads “Another Way” in the right bottom corner of the graphic. All text is green.
A solid green graphic with the following contributors listed in a column on the far left, “Ari Wolff, Ashley Hunt, Avram Finkelstein, Cassils, Chloë Bass, Denise Shanté Brown, Elisa Harkins, ENTRE, Gaye Chan / Eating in Public, Kathie deNobriga, LJ Roberts, Mary Patten, Mona Gazala, Risa Puleo, The Center for Artistic Activism.” The contributors are written out in medium sized black text.

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the nearly 150 practitioners, art workers, community partners, and other peers who participated in our fieldwide research partnership with the Center for Artistic Activism. Gathering together inspired us to dive deeper into intimate conversations between practitioners and explore new forms to share their wisdom and experience
